The Singer Not The Song: Unconventional, slothful yam set in Mexico engaging clash of Catholic minister and local bandit to command the town, with Demongeot in love with the clergyman. Cast includes Dirk Bogarde, John Factories, Mylene Demongeot, and Eric Pohlmann. (129 minutes, 1961)

Down in the Delta: With her life a mess and essentially no desiere to work, lone mother Woodard boards the bus with her 2 kids to spend the summer in the Mississippi Delta, living with family members and worlking in their restaraunt. Episodic drama recoups from awkward start to better points for utter likability. Woodard beams and Freeman gives one of the best acting jobs of his career. Cast includes Alfre Woodard, Al Freeman, Jr., Wesley Snipes, Mary Alice, Esther Rolle, and Loretta Devine. (111 minutes, 1998)

Defiance: Abrasive little film in reference to rootless blue-collar hermit Vincent, who tries to match up his dying kid's bone marrow on his own. He then tames a ferocious N.Y.C. road gang. Cast includes Jan-Michael Vincent, Craft Camey, Theresa Saldana, and Danny Aiello. (102 minutes, 1980)

Nunzio: Retarded Brooklyn market delivery boy Proval envisions he's Superman and then falls in love with bakery associate Feldshuh. Soft tale improved by Proval's fine acting. Cast includes David Proval, James Andronica, Tovah Feldshuh, Morgana Baron, Vincent Russo, Theresa Saldana, and Monica Lewis. (87 minutes, 1978)

Edward My Son: Well acted however talky, stagy drama in which brash, rags-to-riches Tracy coddles his child, hoping to inject within him a sense of accountability. Cast includes Spencer Tracy, Deborah Kerr, Ian Hunter, James Donald, Mervyn Johns, qnd Felix Aylmer. (112 minutes, 1949)

Hold Back Tomorrow: This is another of Haas' oddball cheaply made dramas. This one is about a condemned killer who weds a gal on the day before he is put to death. Cast includes Cleo Moore, John Agar, Frank de Kova, Harry Guardino, and Jan Englund. (75 minutes, 1955)

Soup for One: Occasionally triumphing although choppy presentation of lone New Yorker Rubinek looking for his fantasy gal. Cast includes Saul Rubinek, Marcia Strassman, Gerrit Graham, Teddy Pendergrass, Richard Libertini, Andrea Martin, and Lewis J. Stadlen. (87 minutes, 1982)

Singles: Life in the Seattle dating scene ain't simple. Energetic seriocomedy with some appealing performances (particularly by-Scott and Sedgwick), however by no means as enlightening as you wish it can be. Film has music, setting, and fashion galore, although additionally a rather choppy script. Cast includes Bridget Fonda, Matt Dillon, Campbell Scott, Kyra Sedgwick, Sheila Kelley, Jim Real, Bill Pullman, James Le Gros, Devon Raymond, Camllo Gallardo, Friend Stroller, Jeremy Piven, Paul Giamatti, and Tim Burton. (99 minutes, 1992)

The Search for Signs of Inteligent Life in the Universe: This is a witty re-creation of Lily Tomlin's 1985 one female Broadway show. Her characterizations run the gamut from box woman to juvinille delinquent to New Age Lady, with much of the material in a feminist vein. The show stars Lily Tomlin obviously. (120 minutes, 1991)
