A Look at the Samsung UE46B7000

By Franklin Vick

If you look for this Samsung Television in Currys, Dixons or PC World you'll see it called the UE46B7000. There are a range of model numbers for the matching Television, nevertheless. Whether its the 46B7000, Currys, brand (which has a fine red trim decorating the surround) or the 46B7020 (no red stripe, sold by Amazon and other online places), or, every now and then, the 46B7020W or the 46B7000W, its exactly the same technical specification underneath the surface.

Initial Impressions: The first thing you detect is how slim the UE46B7000 is. Just larger than an inch (and less than 3cm) in depth. The black sheer finish to the edge of the screen looks great, as does the slim see-through connection between the monitor and the base. A different bonus point is that Samsung has incorporated all of the key parts within the set - several manufacturers have required viewers to find a place for a detached box for such items as the Freeview tuner.

Sound: Akin to a lot of flatscreen TVs the audio output on the UE46B7000 is somewhat modest. The UE46B7000 is too narrow to allow a sufficient sound system. Look to connecting it to a separate sound system to get adequate audio to hope to go with the picture quality.

Picture Quality: This is the chief advantage of the UE46B7000 over its competitors, in that it has replaced fluorescent backlighting with Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Even with different backlighting, the UE46B7000 is a TV that uses LCD technology. The LED backlighting is supposed to have the following advantages:

* LEDs offer a more even light - they utilize a grid system, rather than the usual fluorescent light source.

* Only plasma Televisions have created flawless blacks until now - this enables LCD ones to do so as well.

* Reaction times (when viewing a fast changing picture) are faster.

* The colour array that can be displayed is wider.

Socket connections: The UE46B7000 has all the ports to link up to other equipment and PCs that nearly all of us are expected to require - an LAN port, 2 USB ones and 4 HDMI ports. With a separate, easily purchased wireless USB stick, the UE46B7000 can get into any home wireless network and also, any USB memory device can be used to allow it to play most multimedia file formats.

The principle remote control is a rather strangely shaped tool, a tad like a shoehorn. A little uncomfortable to use at first, but OK when you're used to it. And a small remote is also provided - enabling power of and on, together with channel and volume changes.

Environment: Using fewer than-0 watts in everyday use, the UE46B7000 will cost less to run than other comparable TVs

To Conclude: The UE46B7000 has just manifestly run of the mill sound output, as with most flatscreen Televisions. However the rich colours and deep blacks it produces outperform other similarly priced TVs. - 29968
