The Next Trend Is Happening: Blu-ray

There was a day, not too long ago, when you had to choose between the cassette and the CD. Then it was VHS or DVD. Now, the great leap forward is Blu-ray. Yeah, you heard right. Blue-ray. It sounds fancy, like its got some kind of special sauce that is going to transform your life and maybe for once, it might be true. For someone who appreciates the hiss and pop of vinyl, it is hard to make the case for any kind of new, improved media format.

Hey, people flocked to the CD. They couldn't get enough of it. It was sleek, chrome-colored and reminded us of that circular beauty: the LP. The improvement from clunky cassettes was visible. People could see how they cold save space, enjoy the album artwork, and jive to the jumping digital sound. The same jump was evident with VHS to DVD.

The hefty clamor of the VHS tape seemed like some relic from the Fifties when you compared it to the elegance of the DVD. When people can see how a new technology can impact something as simple as the space they can save, they will go for it. The reduction of size and maximizing of space is a great sell. The improved audio and visual experience is icing on the cake.

This is why the Blu-ray has been a slow sell so far. Its not that the Blu-ray will save you any more space than the DVD. In fact, their dimensions are nearly identical. The proof, in this case, is in the pudding and that makes for a hard sell. You have to rely on word of mouth campaigns to get people interested in updating their entire music and movie catalogue to keep up with the Jones.

Most Blu-ray collections, especially the Disney Blu-ray line, offer superior sound and film playback. It's that simple and the reason why it's so hard to get people moving on them. You have to watch a Blu-ray movie to appreciate the great leap forward in 35mm compression rates and Dolby 5.1 soundtracks. That's the slow build and slow burn of getting onto the Blu-ray bandwagon.
